Why You Need Sunscreen Every Day — Even When It’s Cloudy or Cold
As a licensed esthetician, one of the most common misconceptions I hear from clients is, “I don’t need sunscreen today—it’s cloudy.” The truth is, sunscreen isn’t just for sunny summer days. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are present year-round, and they can still penetrate through clouds, windows, and even glass doors. That means your skin is still being exposed to the main cause of premature aging and pigmentation, even when the sun doesn’t feel strong.
Understanding UV Rays
There are two main types of UV rays that affect our skin: UVA and UVB.
UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are responsible for premature aging, wrinkles, and age spots. They are present all day, every day, and can pass through clouds and glass.
UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and are strongest during sunny weather.
Even on an overcast day, up to 80% of UV rays can still reach your skin. That’s why consistent sun protection is essential, no matter the season.
Why Sunscreen Matters Year-Round
Wearing sunscreen daily isn’t just about avoiding burns—it’s about protecting your skin’s long-term health. Here are a few key reasons to make SPF part of your everyday routine:
1. Prevents Premature Aging:
Sun exposure breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to fine lines, sagging, and uneven texture. Daily sunscreen helps keep skin firm and youthful.
2. Reduces Pigmentation and Age Spots:
UV exposure triggers excess melanin production, causing sun spots and discoloration. Consistent SPF use prevents existing pigmentation from darkening and reduces the risk of new spots forming.
3. Protects Against Skin Cancer:
Sunscreen is one of the most effective tools for reducing your risk of skin cancer. Even small, repeated doses of UV damage can accumulate over time.
4. Boosts the Results of Professional Treatments:
If you invest in facials, chemical peels, or corrective skincare, daily SPF ensures those results last. Without it, sun exposure can undo the benefits of your treatments and products.
Finding the Right Sunscreen
For most clients, I recommend choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Look for formulas that include added antioxidants or hydrating ingredients for extra protection and nourishment.
One of my top professional favorites is the Pfecta Solar Elixir Serum Sunscreen. It protects the skin from harmful UV rays while delivering a lightweight, serum-like finish that layers beautifully under makeup. For a more affordable drugstore option, Neutrogena’s Dry Touch SPF is another great choice.
Sunscreen Tips from an Esthetician
Apply sunscreen every morning, even if you don’t plan to go outside.
Reapply every two hours when outdoors, or after sweating or swimming.
Don’t forget your neck, chest, and hands—these areas show sun damage first.
Store sunscreen in your bag or car so you never forget to reapply.
The Bottom Line
Consistent sunscreen use is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to protect your skin from damage and aging. Whether it’s sunny, cloudy, or rainy, applying SPF every day will help preserve your skin’s health, glow, and youthful appearance.
If you’re unsure which sunscreen is right for your skin type, book a facial or skincare consultation at Pure Glow Esthetics in Fair Oaks, California. I’ll help you create a customized routine that fits your lifestyle and protects your skin year-round.
How to Fade Age Spots and Brighten Your Skin Naturally
Age spots are one of the most common skin concerns I see as an esthetician here in California. They often appear as flat, brown spots on the face, hands, chest, or other sun-exposed areas. While they’re completely normal and harmless, many people want to reduce their appearance for a brighter, more even complexion. The good news is that with the right skincare ingredients and consistent care, you can see visible improvement over time.
What Causes Age Spots
Age spots are most commonly caused by sun exposure over time. Ultraviolet light speeds up the production of melanin, which can lead to uneven pigment. Genetics, hormones, and inflammation can also play a role. Once these spots appear, they don’t fade easily without targeted treatment.
Ingredients That Help Fade Age Spots
When choosing skincare to address hyperpigmentation and age spots, look for ingredients that support brightening and skin renewal rather than harsh bleaching agents. Some of the most effective ingredients include:
Vitamin C (Ascorbyl Glucoside)
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that brightens skin, evens out discoloration, and helps protect against further damage from free radicals.
Niacinamide
Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide helps regulate pigment production, improve hydration, and strengthen the skin barrier.
Resmelin
This ingredient is known to suppress melanocyte activity, which helps reduce the appearance of dark spots over time.
Botanical Extracts
Plant-based ingredients like Malva Sylvestris, Mentha Piperita, and Primula Veris provide soothing, brightening, and calming benefits without irritation.
My Favorite Brightening Serum
One of my favorite professional products for age spots is the Mela Defense Serum. It contains a blend of niacinamide, vitamin C, Resmelin, and botanical extracts that work together to brighten and even out skin tone. This serum is lightweight, gentle, and suitable for most skin types, including sensitive and mature skin. When used consistently, it can help fade age spots and restore a more luminous complexion.
How to Use Brightening Products Effectively
Consistency is key. Apply your serum on clean, dry skin twice a day, followed by moisturizer and SPF in the morning. Sunscreen is absolutely essential because without sun protection, pigment will continue to darken. For best results, pair your skincare routine with professional facials and regular exfoliation to enhance product absorption.
Professional Help for Stubborn Spots
If you have stubborn or deep pigmentation, in-office treatments like enzyme exfoliation, LED therapy, or gentle peels can help accelerate results. A customized treatment plan from a licensed esthetician can address your specific concerns and help you achieve brighter, healthier skin.
Final Thoughts
Age spots don’t have to be permanent. With the right ingredients, sun protection, and professional guidance, you can soften their appearance and regain a more youthful glow. If you’re in the Fair Oaks or Sacramento area and want personalized skincare advice, I’d love to help you create a plan that works for your skin.

Glow from the Inside Out: How Your Diet Affects Your Skin
Hi, I’m Mikayla, a licensed esthetician with over eight years of experience helping clients achieve radiant, healthy skin. Today, I want to share something that many people overlook: how the food you eat directly impacts the health and appearance of your skin.
Your Skin Reflects Your Diet
Healthy skin isn’t just about the products you use—it’s also about what you put into your body. Foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can support your skin’s natural repair processes, while processed foods, excess sugar, and inflammatory ingredients can trigger breakouts, redness, and premature aging.
Nutrients Your Skin Loves
Vitamin C – Found in citrus fruits, berries, and leafy greens, vitamin C is essential for collagen production, helping your skin stay firm and youthful.
Vitamin E – This antioxidant, present in nuts and seeds, protects your skin from damage caused by free radicals.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Found in fatty fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds, omega-3s reduce inflammation and help maintain your skin’s natural barrier.
Zinc – Essential for healing and reducing acne, zinc is found in pumpkin seeds, lean meats, and legumes.
The Skin-Diet Connection
Certain foods can exacerbate skin issues. For example, high-sugar diets may increase inflammation, leading to breakouts or dullness. Dairy and highly processed foods can also trigger irritation or acne in some people. On the other hand, a diet focused on whole foods, hydration, and balanced nutrients supports your skin from the inside out.
Hydration is Key
Drinking enough water isn’t just good for your body—it’s crucial for your skin. Proper hydration keeps your skin plump, reduces dryness, and supports your natural glow. Herbal teas and water-rich fruits and vegetables are excellent options to boost hydration.
Pair Your Diet with Professional Skincare
While a balanced diet is essential, combining it with a professional skincare routine maximizes your results. As an esthetician, I help clients not only treat skin concerns externally but also educate them on internal factors that affect their skin. Nutrition and skincare together create lasting, visible improvements.
Take the First Step Toward Radiant Skin
Your skin deserves care both inside and out. By making mindful dietary choices and using the right skincare routine, you can prevent damage, repair your skin, and achieve a natural, healthy glow.

How to Prep for Your First (or Next) Brazilian Wax
Getting a Brazilian wax for the first time—or even the tenth—can feel a little intimidating. At Pure Glow Esthetics in Fair Oaks, my goal is to make the experience as comfortable, professional, and empowering as possible. I want every woman who walks through my door to leave feeling confident and beautiful in her own skin.
To help you get the best results and make your appointment go smoothly, here are my top tips on how to prepare for your Brazilian wax.
1. Let it grow (a little!)
Hair should be at least ¼ inch long before your appointment—about the length of a grain of rice. This helps the wax grip the hair properly so it removes cleanly from the root. If the hair is too short, the wax won’t be as effective and can cause unnecessary discomfort.
2. Exfoliate the day before
Gently exfoliate the area the day before your appointment. This helps remove dead skin and allows the wax to adhere better to the hair instead of the skin. Avoid harsh scrubs—something gentle like a soft washcloth or an exfoliating mitt is perfect.
3. Skip lotions and oils
On the day of your wax, keep the skin clean and dry. Oils, lotions, or creams can prevent the wax from gripping the hair properly.
4. Wear loose, breathable clothing
After your wax, your skin may be slightly sensitive, so loose-fitting clothing helps prevent irritation or friction. Cotton underwear is your best friend for the next 24 hours.
5. Avoid caffeine and alcohol beforehand
Both caffeine and alcohol can make your skin more sensitive, which can increase discomfort during waxing. Try to avoid them for a few hours before your appointment.
6. Breathe and relax
It’s normal to be nervous, especially if it’s your first time. Remember that I’ve been a licensed esthetician for 8 years, and this is a judgment-free zone. Everyone’s body is unique, and there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.
7. Aftercare matters
After your wax, avoid hot baths, saunas, workouts, or tight clothing for at least 24 hours. Keeping the area clean and dry will help prevent irritation. I’ll walk you through aftercare at your appointment so you feel confident about what to expect.
At Pure Glow Esthetics, I use Miss Cire hard wax, a professional-grade formula that’s gentle on the skin but tough on hair. The result is a smooth, clean finish with less redness and irritation.
If you’ve been curious about getting a Brazilian wax, I’d love to take care of you. You can text or call (925) 953-0080 to book your appointment, or visit my website at pureglowesthetics.net.
Your comfort and confidence are my priority—let’s help you feel amazing in your skin.

Discover the Secret to Radiant, Healthy Skin: Why Korean Skincare is a Game-Changer
Hi, I’m Mikayla, a licensed esthetician with over eight years of experience helping clients achieve their healthiest, most radiant skin. Today, I want to talk about something I get asked all the time: Korean skincare and why it truly stands out from regular skincare.
Why Korean Skincare Works
Korean skincare isn’t just a trend—it’s a science-backed approach that focuses on repairing and nourishing your skin rather than just treating surface-level issues. Unlike many Western skincare routines that rely heavily on harsh chemicals and quick fixes, Korean skincare emphasizes hydration, gentle exfoliation, and barrier repair. This approach helps your skin heal, stay resilient, and maintain a natural glow over time.
The Power of Skin Repair
Healthy skin starts with a strong skin barrier. Your skin barrier protects against environmental stressors, prevents moisture loss, and keeps irritation at bay. Korean skincare is designed to support this barrier with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and fermented extracts. By nourishing your skin instead of stripping it, you’re allowing it to repair itself naturally. This leads to fewer breakouts, reduced sensitivity, and a smoother, more youthful complexion.
Why Less is More with Acids
Acids can be amazing for exfoliation and brightening, but too many acids in your routine can damage your skin barrier and lead to irritation, redness, and long-term sensitivity. One of the reasons I love Korean skincare is that it uses acids strategically and sparingly, combining them with soothing, hydrating ingredients to ensure your skin is never overworked. Overloading your skin with multiple strong acids is a common mistake that can set back your progress rather than help it.
Gentle, Layered Skincare for Lasting Results
Korean skincare routines often involve multiple steps—cleansing, toning, essence, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen—but each step is gentle and targeted. This layering method allows your skin to absorb nutrients effectively while maintaining balance and strength. It’s about consistency, patience, and treating your skin with the care it deserves.
Why Choose a Professional Esthetician
As a professional esthetician, I’ve seen firsthand how incorporating Korean skincare techniques and products can transform skin over time. Whether your goal is to repair damage, soothe sensitivity, or achieve a luminous glow, a personalized routine guided by an expert can save you time, money, and frustration.
If you’re ready to experience the benefits of Korean skincare for yourself, I’d love to help you craft a routine that works specifically for your skin type and concerns. Your healthiest, most radiant skin is just a consultation away!

How to Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier: A Comprehensive Guide Coming from an Esthetician
As an esthetician, one of the most common concerns you may encounter is clients struggling with a damaged skin barrier. A healthy skin barrier is essential for maintaining hydration, preventing irritation, having clear skin, and protecting against environmental aggressors. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to repair a damaged skin barrier, tailored for both your clients and your practice.
Understanding the Skin Barrier
The skin barrier, or stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of the skin. It consists of dead skin cells and lipids that work together to retain moisture and shield the underlying layers from bacteria, pollutants, and irritants. When the barrier is compromised, it can lead to dryness, redness, irritation, and increased sensitivity.
Common Causes of Skin Barrier Damage
Harsh Skincare Products: Over-exfoliation, using products with high alcohol content, or irritating ingredients can strip the skin of its natural oils.
Environmental Factors: Pollution, extreme weather conditions, and sun exposure can weaken the barrier.
Lifestyle Habits: Stress, lack of sleep, and poor diet can contribute to skin barrier dysfunction.
Underlying Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or rosacea can compromise the barrier further.
Signs of a Damaged Skin Barrier
Dry, flaky skin
Redness or irritation
Increased sensitivity
Breakouts or acne flare-ups
A feeling of tightness or discomfort
Steps to Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier
Gentle Cleansing
Use a mild, cream, sulfate-free cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils. Avoid hot water, as it can further dry out the skin. (Hale and Hush Quiet wash and Ayur Medic Calming Cleanser are my current favs!)
Moisturize Effectively
Opt for a moisturizer that contains ceramides, fatty acids, and hyaluronic acid. These ingredients help replenish the skin’s lipid barrier and retain moisture.
Incorporate Barrier-Repairing Ingredients
Look for products containing niacinamide, which helps strengthen the barrier, and panthenol, which soothes and hydrates the skin.
Limit Exfoliation
Temporarily eliminate exfoliating. Focus on gentle, hydrating masks instead.
Sun Protection
Encourage the use of broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. UV exposure can exacerbate barrier damage, so protective measures are crucial.
Avoid Irritating Ingredients
Steer clear of products with strong fragrances, alcohol, and other harsh chemicals. Instead, recommend soothing formulations designed for sensitive skin.
Stay Hydrated
Encourage clients to drink plenty of water and incorporate hydrating foods into their diets, such as fruits and vegetables.
Consider Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics can help support skin health from the inside out. Recommend discussing these options with a healthcare professional.
Seek Professional Treatments
Offer gentle, restorative treatments in your practice, such as hydrating facials or LED therapy, which can help soothe and repair the skin barrier.
When to Seek Professional Help
If a client’s skin barrier doesn’t improve after implementing these steps or if they experience severe symptoms, it’s essential to refer them to a dermatologist. They can assess for underlying skin conditions and provide targeted treatments.
Conclusion
Repairing a damaged skin barrier takes time and patience. By educating your clients on the importance of a healthy barrier and guiding them through the healing process, you’ll empower them to achieve and maintain healthy skin. Remember, the goal is not only to repair but to promote long-term skin health. Your expertise as an esthetician plays a vital role in this journey.
The Essential Role of Hydration for Healthy Skin: An Esthetician’s Perspective
As an esthetician, I often emphasize the importance of proper skincare routines, but one aspect that frequently gets overlooked is hydration—specifically, drinking enough water. While topical products play a crucial role in skin health, internal hydration is just as vital. Here’s why drinking water is essential for your skin and how it contributes to your overall complexion.
1. Maintains Skin Elasticity
Water is a fundamental component of our skin cells. Adequate hydration helps maintain skin elasticity, preventing sagging and promoting a youthful appearance. When you’re dehydrated, your skin can lose its plumpness, leading to fine lines and a dull complexion. By drinking enough water, you support your skin's natural elasticity, keeping it firm and youthful.
2. Promotes a Radiant Glow
Hydration is key to achieving that coveted dewy glow. When your body is well-hydrated, it reflects in your skin. Water helps flush out toxins, leading to a clearer, brighter complexion. On the other hand, dehydration can cause your skin to appear tired and lackluster. By prioritizing hydration, you can help your skin radiate from within.
3. Supports the Skin Barrier
Your skin’s barrier is crucial for protecting against environmental stressors, such as pollution and UV rays. When you’re dehydrated, your skin barrier can become compromised, leading to increased sensitivity, dryness, and irritation. Drinking water helps maintain the integrity of this barrier, ensuring that your skin remains healthy and resilient.
4. Aids in the Healing Process
If you’re dealing with skin issues such as acne, eczema, or dryness, hydration plays a significant role in the healing process. Water helps deliver nutrients to skin cells, promoting faster healing and recovery. When your skin is adequately hydrated, it can better combat inflammation and irritation, resulting in a clearer and healthier complexion.
5. Reduces Puffiness and Dark Circles
Surprisingly, drinking enough water can actually help reduce puffiness and dark circles around the eyes. Dehydration can lead to water retention, causing your body to hold onto excess fluid. By staying hydrated, you help your body maintain balance and reduce the appearance of swelling and darkness around the eyes.
6. Enhances Product Absorption
No matter how luxurious your skincare products are, their effectiveness can be compromised if your skin is dehydrated. When you drink enough water, you improve your skin’s ability to absorb active ingredients from your products. This means that your serums and moisturizers will work more effectively, giving you the best possible results from your skincare routine.
Tips for Staying Hydrated
Set a Routine: Carry a water bottle with you throughout the day to remind yourself to drink.
Flavor it Up: If plain water isn’t appealing, try adding slices of fruit, herbs, or cucumber for a refreshing twist.
Monitor Your Intake: Aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, but adjust based on your activity level and climate.
Final Thoughts
As an esthetician, I can’t stress enough the importance of hydration for maintaining healthy, beautiful skin. While topical treatments are essential, remember that what you put into your body is just as important. Drinking enough water can help your skin maintain its elasticity, glow, and overall health. So, raise your glass and toast to beautiful skin—one sip at a time!
What the heck is high frequency?
It all begins with an idea.
What the heck is high frequency? Good question!
Let me start with the very basic answer. High frequency is used to treat various skin conditions. High frequency machines work by using a glass electrode. When the glass electrode has contact with the skin, a mild electrical current passes through the electrode and produces a subtle glow and slight buzzing noise. This procedure is painless and provides satisfying results. With high frequency you will see your skin become more smooth, less inflamed, significantly more plump, and lessened acne. One of the super interesting facts about this treatment is that it is suitable for all skin types. I specifically love it for acne prone skin and break outs.
Enriched oxygen molecules are produced which results in an instant anti-bacterial reaction. (Bacteria cannot live in oxygen thereby killing the bacteria.) This is very helpful with acne prone skin. By ridding the skin of bacteria and regulating the sebum production, this will help to decongest the pores.
The natural tissue warming helps blood vessels push out toxins, while the skin cells are receiving hydrating volume. High frequency increases blood circulation and stimulates cell turnover, which in turn helps with the level of collagen and elastin produced in skin. This treatment is proven to work for many different skin lesions such as acne, burns, cold sores, cellulite, and even as an after-care treatment for waxing!
There are so many great benefits to high frequency but these are just a few. My point being ..book a facial today to experience this rejuvenating treatment.
